FILM LOGISTICS: Optimisation strategies – #1 Walking distances

In a new series, NEPATA CEO Fabian Franke reveals how you too can optimise your logistics. Strategy 1: Ensure better organisation of your processes. Here are a few ideas to get you thinking about walking distances. 1. Keep walking distances short. During our visits to customers, we very often see logistics systems where no obvious optimisation of walking routes has been carried out. Yet there are media, film series or colours that are used more frequently than others. Optimise walking distances for collecting and returning items by placing the rolls that are used most frequently closest to the machines. It’s worth taking a look at your own data in the ERP system: which items are the fast-moving stock? 2. Stock replenishments for fast-moving items too. For vinyl films that are processed frequently, you naturally need to restock whole rolls more often. So perhaps the pallet containing the black or white vinyl films shouldn’t be placed right at the top of the shelf. 3. Store cores closer to the machine Walking distances can be reduced not only for the vinyl films themselves, but also for materials such as cardboard cores. Here, too, people often go to incredible lengths to bring, for example, a specific width of core for a particular vinyl film to the machine.
